So Oasis is over. I haven’t seen it stated in so many words, but without Noel, I can’t see them pressing forward, at least successfully.

I also can’t say I was a fan. Sure, there were a couple of songs that were pretty good, back in the zeitgeist of Britpop. But the cocky bastards just rubbed me the wrong way too much to let me enjoy anything about them. Unfortunate, I suppose, but not a great void in my life.

What I find intriguing are the messages I’ve seen on the Net about Oasis having been the greatest British band out there. It made me choke on my water the first time I read it. I think the world has gone mad.

Frankly, I found Oasis were more stagger than swagger. It seemed they could never quite keep it together for their own sake or for their fans’ sake.

Because many people know me as a musical Anglophile, they assume I’ve been affected by the breakup. In a way, I have. The idea of Oasis being touted as the greatest British band, even just during the wake of their demise, is too much to stomach.

I won’t be so bold as to proclaim any one greatest British band. That’s absurd. But the bands (with soundclips) below are, without question, some of the most important artists in music, period. And they also just happen to be about 90% of my favorite bands ever.

If you’re not familiar with the Beatles, you should probably log off & go to your nearest record store. Seriously.

  1. Thanks a great article.

  2. Wonderful selection of bands! The majority % of what I listen to is British as well, though I’ve never really been a fan of Oasis, myself. There used to be lots of great American bands, but I think that started slipping away in the aftermath of grunge.

  3. Totally agree! Very limited great stuff out of the US post-grunge. I find myself just getting the new albums of the dozen or so fave American bands over the last few years. But I love the steady flow of awesome Brit music during the same time. I’m really glad you enjoyed the list.

  4. Oasis had a good run….

You stole my CD collection didn’t you? Keep up the beautiful blog (to listen to and watch) – and have a safe trip.

    Oh yeah….Blur were better

    Tim

  5. Thank you. And I would love to steal your CD collection so keep it safe. ;-)

Noel leaving was probably the smartest thing he ever did. I read a review somewhere that described Definitely Maybe as the most important British album in history, or something inane like that. Where do they find these people?

blur on a bad day were infinitely better than Oasis. I adore those guys…

  6. I should put you in my will…it’s a lot of music……

    Great bands.
You have all my favorites and more.

It’s hard to find someone with so good music.

    Great bands!
It’s hard to find someone with so good music.

    Seriously!

  9. Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it — and that you like the same bands too. :)

  10. Hi, that`s funny!
I was looking for nice images of my fave bands to make a gallery with the title “Why I love Brits” ;-)
Then I noticed that you idea was very similiar to mine!

Have you left out “Kula Shaker” on purpose?

Or how about “Cream” and bands of the British Blues Revival?

kind regards & keep on rockin`

  11. LOL! Oh, I hope you do still make a page. I’d love to check it out.

And yes, I realized after I posted that I left off so many bands – The Animals, Kula Shaker, Black Sabbath, Echo & the Bunnymen, Sex Pistols, Siouxsie & the Banshees, etc! I chalk it up to running out of steam that particular night. I have a feeling I’ll make a second part to it because I keep remembering others I’ve left off…and it seems like a disgrace to leave them off. :) Cheers!

  12. good list, can’t believe you missed out oasis though, one of the best british bands ever

  13. Brilliant band selection!!

And I particularly love the last band. Haha, because seriously if you don’t know them… seriously?!

    Awesome music taste :]

  14. Thanks! Yeah, that would be a scary thought for someone not to know them!

  15. I’m sorry I don’t know The Beatles. But, I do know they’re British. British Bands are so, cool!!! Like right now McFly!!

  16. All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure.
