Peculiar Bent of Genius
Courtesy of My Modern Metropolis, I found an interesting post on SAS Christian, a contemporary artist who paints stirring, evocative portraits of women. The following excerpt from her bio is particularly noteworthy:
Originally the intention of my paintings was just about creating a strong image, purely visual. I wanted to impart a modern tongue-in-cheek humor, incorporating my experiences. Contemporary, ballsy, flirty, weepy girls; punk, catholic, no-nonsense, damaged but not broken girls. Funny, intelligent, unusual, independent, odd ball, outsiders. Lovely.
As time goes on I find myself relying less on the narrative and more on the emotive. I hope that my work can connect with people on different levels. I’m trying to harness a single moment in time, an emotional response, seemingly insignificant gesture that can mean so much.
If you have a creative impulse, whether it be art, music, writing, theater, cooking, whatever — express it. Don’t let your own hang-ups, caution, fear of failure or ridicule stop you…
…
One of SAS Christian’s influences is Mark Ryden, painter of the chilling, fascinating and whimsical works below.
…
And lastly, here is a gallery for a spectacular Russian artist, Alex Andreyev, who specializes in his self-dubbed “Hermitic art”. His surrealist pieces are mesmerizing, disturbing and at times quite soothing – three qualities I never imagined to find together. But he does it beautifully.

Disturbing indeed… I wonder what it would be like to walk through a gallery with all those haunting eyes looking down on you…
But I like the excerpt. Disturbing has its place, alongside the non-surrealist works.
Definitely kind of creepy, but also really cool!
